On the first Saturday in June each year the richest horse race in Britain takes place on the Epsom Downs racecourse. The Epsom Derby has been the feature race of the flat season since its inception back in 1780 and is the middle leg of the British Triple Crown preceded by the 2,000 Guineas in May at Newmarket and then followed in September by the St.Leger at Doncaster.
The Group One race is open to 3yo thoroughbreds and run over 1m4f on a course like no other with it’s undulations and the famous Tattenham Corner which is taken downhill at speed and throws the runners into the home straight for the long slog to the winning post. It’s a gruelling race for these young horses and tests these equine superstars to the limit and the jockey’s have to be on their toes for the whole of the 12f trip.
History is full of stories from the Epsom Derby and jockeys like Lester Piggott and Frankie Dettori have their own chapters as well as legendry horses such as Nijinsky, Sir Ivor, Mill Reef, Shergar and more recently See The Stars have all been successful in the most famous flat race in the world.
The Derby attracts the attention of the nation and is watched by millions of people on TV as well as the 120,000 spectators who flock to the Downs each year. The inside of the course produces a special atmosphere with rows upon rows of open top double decker buses, parties and barbeques everywhere you look and a real British feel to proceedings.
